When the winter update arrives#
Snow, holiday decorations and the winter activities come back once a year. For the last three years that has been the end of November, a week or so earlier than it used to be:

Everything is removed again in early to mid January. Like the Halloween items, what you buy is yours to keep. Leave it on your plot or put it in your inventory before the snow goes.
1. The log cabin in the snow#
The look most people picture first. A wooden cabin, pine trees all around, smoke from the chimney and warm light in every window. iKotori built a Christmas cabin as a two part speedbuild, and alauro has done two winter cabins at very different budgets, one at 150k and one at 380k.
Items that do the work
- Snowy Pine Tree ($580) and Snowy Spruce Tree ($550). Plant them in loose groups rather than rows.
- Illuminated Snowy Spruce Tree ($680) near the path, so the garden has light at night.
- Snowy Round Bush ($100) and Snowy Boulder ($380) to break up the ground. Both can be resized.
- Icicle Lights ($95) along the eaves.
2. The classic family Christmas house#
A normal suburban house dressed for December: a wreath on the door, lights on the roof, a tree in the front window. It is the easiest one to do on a budget, and iKotori's version uses no gamepasses at all. Thymen_Builds did a two storey take on the same idea.
Items that do the work
- Decorated Wreath ($145) or Illuminated Wreath ($180). Wreaths can go on most doors, which has been possible since the 2021 winter update.
- Festive String Lights ($280), or Blinking Festive String Lights ($340) if you want them to flash.
- Candy Cane Path Light ($90) lining the path to the door.
- Light Up Reindeer ($290) on the lawn.
Lights along the roof need Advanced Placing. Since the 2020 winter update, the gamepass lets you place banners, garlands and string lights freely between two points, which is how builders run lights neatly along a roofline. Without it you are limited to the usual placement spots.
3. The cozy Christmas interior#
Some of the best winter builds are simple on the outside and do all the work indoors. A fireplace, stockings, a big tree and lots of warm lamps. iKotori's cozy Christmas house has a full interior tour worth watching just for how the living room is set out.
Items that do the work
- Christmas Tree ($500), or the Elegant Holiday Tree ($520). For a small room, the Mini Holiday Tree ($160) on a side table.
- Holiday Mantle Decor ($300) and a row of Fancy Stockings ($165) on the fireplace.
- Presents under the tree: Small Christmas Present ($80) up to the Large Classic Round Present ($390).
- Peppermint Pillow ($120) and Festive Tree Pillow ($135) on the sofas, and a Poinsettia ($230) on the table.
Stockings are not just decoration. Since the 2022 update you can wrap gifts, carry them, and put them in stockings for other players to open.
4. The winter mini mansion#
If you have the space and the money, a bigger house gives you more windows to light and more lawn for a display. Bonnie Builds did a winter family mini mansion that shows how to keep a large house festive without covering every surface.
- Garland Wrapped Fancy Pillar or Illuminated Fancy Pillar ($390) on a porch with columns.
- Holiday Archway ($880) over the drive or the front path.
- Large Colorful Christmas Tree ($1,500) in a double height entrance hall.
5. The front yard display#
Some players go all in on the garden. The showpieces here are mostly event items bought with tickets rather than money, so start collecting early.
- Inflatables from the ticket shop: the Giant Inflatable Snowman, Inflatable Reindeer Sleigh and Inflatable Snow Globe.
- Santa's Sleigh and the Self Building Snowman, also ticket items.
- The Holiday Chimney from the ticket shop, if your house does not already have a chimney.
- For money: Jumbo Nutcracker ($375) either side of the door and Wooden Reindeer ($360) on the lawn.
Most seasonal objects work with the Scale tool, so one inflatable can be made larger instead of buying three.
Tips that apply to every idea#
- Check it at night. Press B in Build Mode to change the time of day you see. Lights you placed in daylight often look very different after dark.
- Build the house before the update. The house, layout and landscaping need no event items. Do them now, then decorate the week the snow arrives.
- Winter first, Christmas second. Snowy trees, lights and warm lamps still work in January. Presents and Santa do not. Keep the two layers separate so taking Christmas down is quick.
- Undo rather than sell. Undoing refunds 100%, selling in the same session 95%, and selling later only 70%.
